Yaşlılık dönemi, 65 yaş ve üzeri yaşları ifade eden, bakıma en çok ihtiyaç duyulan dönemlerden biridir. Son yıllarda yaşlı nüfusun hızlı artışı, aile yapısında ve sosyo-kültürel alanda yaşanan değişimler ve kötüleşen ekonomik koşullar yaşlı ihmal istismarını gündeme getirmiştir. Bu derlemede, yaşlı ihmal ve istismarı Bakıcı Stres Kuramı, Sosyal Öğrenme Teorisi, Sosyal Değişim Teorisi, Feminist Teori, Multisistemik Teori, Biyopsikososyal Model doğrultusunda açıklanmaktadır. Ayrıca ulusal ve uluslararası veriler sunulmakta ve ülkemizde yaşlının ihmal ve istismarının daha fazla görüldüğü vurgulanmaktadır. Konu ile ilgili eğitim ve müdahale programlarında konunun öneminin kavranmasına katkı sağlamak amaçlanmıştır.

Old age comprises people aged over 65 years. Old age is a period in which care is most needed. Elder abuse and neglect is common because of the rapidly increasing population, changing family and socio-cultural structures and deterioration of economic conditions in recent years. Elder neglect and abuse in this article is defined according to the Caregiver Stress Theory, The Social Learning Theory, The Social Exchange Theory, Feminist Theory, The Multisystemic Theory and the Biopsychosocial Model. Furthermore many national and international data related to elder abuse and neglect are presented in this paper and it is emphasized that the elder neglect and abuse are more common in Turkey than other nationalities. The educational and interventional programs aim to contribute to the understanding of the importance of elder abuse and neglect.
