Yaşlanma doğal ve kaçınılmaz bir süreçtir. Yaşlanma bir sonuç olmaktan öte, toplumların gelişmişlik düzeyi ile paralellik gösteren ve doğumdan itibaren başlayan, yaşamın olgunlaşma ve bütünlük kazanma sürecini anlatan bir kavramdır. Bununla birlikte yaşlılık, bazı bireyler için gerileme, bağımsızlığı kaybetme, ölüm korkusu gibi anlamları da çağrıştıran bir dönem olma özelliği de göstermektedir. Ancak bireylerin sağlıklı, üretken ve kaliteli bir şekilde yaşlanmaları mümkündür. Bu noktada, sağlıklı yaşlanma ve aktif yaşlanma kavramları son yıllarda üzerinde durulan ve çalışılan önemli konular arasındadır. Doğumda beklenen yaşam süresinin uzaması ve toplumlarda yaşlı nüfusun artması bu konuya dikkat çekilmesinin en önemli nedenleri arasındadır. Bu makalede sağlıklı yaşlanma ve aktif yaşlanma kavramları tartışılarak yaşlanmanın psikososyal boyutu ile ilgili bir bakış açısı sunulacaktır.

Aging is a natural and inevitable process. Aging which is closely related with the development level of a society is not a result but a process which starts immediately after birth and covers the maturity and integrity of life. On the other hand, for some individuals, old age is a period of life which evokes such concepts as a decline in physical and mental capabilities, loss of independence and fear of death. However, it is possible for anyone to age by leading a healthy, productive and quality lifestyle. At this point, the concepts of healthy aging and active aging have taken their place among the issues emphasized and studied most in recent years. Among the most important reasons which draw attention to this issue are the prolongation of life expectancy at birth and increases in the elderly population in societies. In this article, concepts of healthy aging and active aging will be discussed and a new perspective on the psychosocial aspect of aging will be presented.
