Amaç: Çalışmamızın amacı; Epilepsi hastalarının kişilik özelliklerinin yaşam kalitesi üzerine olan etkilerinin araştırılmasıdır. Yöntem: Psikiyatri ve nöroloji polikliniğine ayaktan başvuran epilepsi tanılı 18-65 yaş arası 78 hasta ve yaş ve cinsiyet olarak eşitlenmiş 76 sağlıklı gönüllü çalışmaya alındı. Hastaların en az 1 yıldır epilepsi tanısı ile takip ediliyor olması ve en az 6 aydır stabil olması şartıyla ile sırasıyla tarafımızca hazırlanmış sosyodemografik ve klinik veri formu, Eysenck Kişilik Envanteri (EKE), Beck Anksiyete Ölçeği (BAÖ) ve Beck Depresyon Ölçeği (BDÖ) ve Yaşam Kalitesi Ölçeği Kısa Form (SF-36) uygulandı. Bulgular: Hasta grupları ve kontrol grubu arasında yaş ve cinsiyet arasında istatistiksel farklılık gözlenmemiştir (p>0.05). Hasta ve kontrol grubu arasında; BDÖ puanları (21.32±15.96 ve 10.95±11.66, p<0.001) ile BAÖ puanları (20.46±14.43 ve 12.39±12.09, p<0.001) kontrol grubuna göre hasta grubunda anlamlı olarak daha yüksekti. Hasta ve kontrol grubu arasında; EKE nörotisizm alt ölçek puanı (3.97±1.76 ve 2.53±1.77, p<0.001) ve EKE yalan alt ölçeği (4.56±1.62 ve 4.18±1.38, p<0.05) hasta grubunda istatistiksel olarak anlamlı düzeyde yüksekti. SF-36 fiziksel işlevsellik, fiziksel rol güçlüğü, genel sağlık algısı, sosyal işlevsellik, emosyonel rol güçlüğü, ruhsal sağlık algısı, ağrı alt ölçekleri hasta grupta istatistiksel olarak daha düşüktü (p<0.05). BDÖ ve BAÖ düzeyleri ile yaşam kalitesi ve kişilik envanteri bazı alt ölçekleri arasında anlamlı düzeyde ilişki olduğu saptandı. Tartışma: Epilepsi hastalarının sağlıklı kontrol grubuna göre yaşam kalitelerinin bozuk olduğu, anksiyete ve depresyon gibi ruhsal belirtiler eklendiğinde ise yaşam kalitelerinin daha fazla bozulduğu görülmüştür. Ayrıca nörotisizm kişilik özellik skorları yüksek olan epilepsi hastalarının yaşam kaliteleri negatif yönde etkilenmekteyken; nöbet sıklığının artması sosyal işlevselliği, hastalık süresinin artması ise genel sağlık ve ruhsal sağlık algısını olumsuz yönde etkilemektedir.

Objective: The aim of our study was to investigate the impact of personality traits of epilepsy patients on their quality of life. Methods: A total of 76 epilepsy patients and 78 healthy volunteers between the ages of 18-65 were matched according to age and gender for the study. The patients were administered the following forms; sociodemographic and clinic data form, Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and the MOS 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). Results: The BDI scores and the BAI scores were significantly higher for the epilepsy group compared to the control group. Between the epilepsy group and the control group; the EPQ neuroticism and lie subscale scores were significantly higher in the epilepsy group. According to the SF-36 scores; physical functioning, physical role functioning, social role functioning, emotional role functioning, mental health and pain scores were significantly lower in the epilepsy group. It was discovered that there is a significant relationship between BDI and BAI scores and quality of life and personality inventory scores. Conclusion: It was found that the epilepsy patients had a lower quality of life compared with the control group, which was found to be worsened with comorbid conditions such as anxiety and depression. Furthermore, high neuroticism scores were proven to have negatively affected epilepsy patient’s quality of life, while increases in the frequency of epileptic seizures negatively affects social functioning. The increase in disease duration also adversely affects the perception of general health and mental health.
