Amaç: Bu çalışmada üniversite gençlerinin sahip oldukları bazı kişilik özelliklerinin, olumsuz psikolojik belirtiler göstermesindeki rolü araştırılmıştır. Yöntem: Araştırma, 166 kız ve erkek öğrenciden oluşan üniversite gençleri üzerinde yürütülmüştür. Verilerin toplanmasında kullanılan iki ölçme aracından biri, 17 kişilik özelliğinin sıralandığı ve 5'li dereceleme ile değerlendirildiği soru kağıdı; diğeri ise SCL 90-R Psikolojik Belirti Tarama Ölçeğidir. Bulgular: Varyans analizi sonuçlarına göre, psikolojik özelliklere farklı derecede sahip olma durumu, Olumsuz Belirti Ölçeği ortalama değerlerinde önemli farklılıklara yol açmıştır. Kendilerini aşırı duygusal, sinirli, çekingen, kötümser olarak değerlendirenlerin olumsuz psikolojik belirlileri önemli ölçüde yüksek bulunurken; rahat neşeli, kendine güvenli, öz saygısı yüksek ve sabırlı olarak değerlendirenlerde genel belirti ortalamaları önemli ölçüde düşük bulunmuştur. Tartışma: Araştırma, diğer çalışmalarla tutarlı sonuçlar vermiştir. Bu konuyla ilgili araştırmalarda, gençlerde, psikolojik sorunlara yatkınlığa yol açabilecek, yaygın toplumsal özelliklerin belirlenmesi, aile içinde gelişiminin belirlenmesi ve bunlarla ilgili koruyucu önlemlerin alınmasının yararlı olacağı düşünülmektedir.

Objective: In the present study, the role of some personality traits possessed by the college students, on their psyhological symptoms was investigated. Method: Survey was administered to a group of college students, composed of 166 male and female students. One of the materials used to measure, was a list of 17 personality traits, to be evaluated in 5 degrees; the other one was the Psychological Symptom Check List (SCL 90-R). Results: According to the results of analysis of variance, possessing psyhological traits in different degrees, lead to significant differences in the mean values of psychological symptoms. The symptoms of those who evaluated themselves extremely nervous, shy, pessimistic were found to be significantly highy. On the other hand, general symptom mean values were found to be significantly low, for those who reported themselves as calm, joyful, self-confident, self-respecting and patient. Conclusions: The results of the study are consistent with the other surveys. In further investigations on this area, it is thought to be important to determine specific psychological traits found to be common in society, which lead to psyhological problems among college students. It is also important to study development of psychological traits in the family and to take some preventive cautions.
