Amaç: Kanser tedavisi gören bireylerin ailelerinin, hastalarının ölüm hakkını kullanma ve hekimlerin bu uygulamaya katılması konusundaki görüşlerini öğrenmek amaçlanmıştır. Yöntem: Hasta yakınlarının ötenaziye bakış açılarını ve kendi hastalarına uygulanması konusundaki fikirlerini irdeleyen bir soru formatı kullanıldı. Her hasta yakınına 40 soruluk bir yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formu da verildi. Çalışmaya İstanbul Tıp Fakültesinde (İTF) de tedavi gören 90 kanserli hastanın birinci derece yakınları dahil edildi. Görüşmeler açık uçlu olarak gerçekleştirildi. Sonuçların istatistiki değerlendirilmesi student t testi ile gerçekleştirildi. Bulgular: Hasta yakınlarının % 63.3 ’ü hastaların ölüm isteme hakkının bulunmaması gerektiğini, %75.5'i de doktorların hastanın ölme isteğine yardım etmeğe hakkı olmadığını ifade etti. Hasta yakınlarının eğitiminin artması veya daha önce kanserli başka bir yakının olması ölüm hakkını kullanma yetkisine daha olumlu bakmaları ile doğru orantılı olarak bulundu. Tartışma: Kanser, hastaların ve ailelerinin birlikte pek çok zorluğu paylaştığı, tanı ve tedavi süreçlerinde yoğun stresler içeren bir hastalıktır. Kanser tanısı ilk aşamalarından itibaren ölüm, acı çekmek, şiddetli ağrı hissetmek gibi pek çok kavramı gündeme getirebilir. Hem hasta hem de aile kendisini ölümle yüzleşmek zorunda hissedebilir. Ancak yine de hasta aileleri, çalışmamızda gösterildiği gibi ülkemizde, hastaların yaşam hakkının sonuna kadar kullanılması gerektiğini ve doktorların sadece hayat veren konumda olması gerektiği inancını taşımaktadırlar.

Objective: The study was designed to evaluate the perspectives of the cancer patients’ families towards euthanasia and involvement of the medical caregivers in this act. Method: A questioning methodology was formatted to assess the opinions about euthanasia and its applicability to their own patients of the cancer families. A semi-structured scale of 40 questions was also applied to the participants. First degree relatives of 90 cancer patients undergoing treatment at the Istanbul University Medical Faculty were recruited for the study. Interviews were performed open-ended. t-test was utilized for statistical analysis. Results: Our results showed that 63.3% of the cancer families denied the right to euthanasia for their own patients. 75.5% also believed that medical caregivers should not have the right to assist their patients for euthanasia. Participants with a higher educational level and those with a history of a previous cancer patient in one of the members of the family tended towards more acceptance of euthenasia. Conclusion: Cancer is a disease that involves high level stresses during both the diagnostic and the treatment periods which are usually shared by the patient and his family. Diagnosis of cancer brings out many concepts such as death, pain and suffering. Patients as well as the families has to go through a period where they have to face death. Our study shows that even at these stages in our country, families believe that the right to live should be protected till the end and medical caregivers should only be responsible to save life not to take it.
