Grup tekniğine uygun olmayan hastaların araştırılmaları, grubun işlevselliğini artırır. Uygun grup yöntemini tanımlamak için pek çok araştırma yapılmasına rağmen, her bireyin ve her grubun pek çok karmaşıklık içermesi nedeniyle, özgün seçim ölçütlerini tanımlamak zordur. Yöntem sorunları halen çözümlenememiştir. Bugün için klinisyenler en azından hastaların tanılarını, yaşlarını, cinsiyetlerini, etnik kökenlerini, sosyoekonomik durumlarını göz önünde bulundurarak, seçim ölçütleri açısından optimum işlevselliği sağlayacak grup kompozisyonunu oluşturmaya çalışmaktadırlar. Son otuz yıldır, yüksek erken ayrılma oranlarından endişelenen klinisyenler bunu azaltmak için çeşitli hazırlık aşamaları oluşturmaya uğraşmaktadırlar. Birçok araştırmacı, bu çalışmaların yardımcı ve ümit verici olduğunu; yöntemsel sorunlar giderildikçe, grup davranışını ve tedavi cevabını daha erken öngörmekte daha başarılı olunacağını düşünmektedirler.

The proper selection and preparation of patients for group therapy is significantly effective for the benefit of group therapy. These procedures mitigate not only the unrealistic expectations that cause dissappointment and attrition, but also anticipatory anxiety. The investigation of the patients, who are not appropriate for group therapy increases the group's performance. Inspite of numerous clinical research, which have been done to define a proper group method, it’s difficult to desribe spesific selection criteria because of the complesity of each member and the group. Method problems could not have been solved yet. Taking account of at least the patients' diagnosis, age, gender, ethnicity and socioeconomical status, clinicians have recently attempted to establish a group composition which will provide an optimum function in terms of selection criteria. For the past three decades, clinicians who concern about high early dropout rates, have attempted to define a variety of preperation procedures to dicrease these rates.Most researchers and clinicians think that basic direction of those studies has been helpful and promising, and that further refinement of method problems will lead to a better early predictibality of the group behaviour and treatment response.
