DSM-IV ölçütlerine göre duygudurum bozukluğu tanısı almış hastalarda irritabl barsak sendromunun varlığını taramaya yönelik sorular sorularak yapılan görüşmelerde %35.8’inde bu sendromun varlığı saptanmıştır. Hastaların %70.2’si duygudurum bozukluğu ile ilgili belirtileri şiddetlendiğinde barsak yakınmalarının da şiddetlendiğini bildirmektedirler. Bu bulgular duygudurum bozukluğunun, irritabl barsak sendromunda gastroenterolog semptomların sübjektif algılanmasında önemli bir rol oynadığını düşündürmektedir.

During the interviews with patients diagnosed as having a mood disorder according to DSM-IV criteria, questions regarding irritable bowel syndrome has been asked and 35.8 % of them has been found to suffer from this syndrome. 70.2 % of the patients had reported that their irritable bowel symptoms had exacerbated during the exacerbation of their mood symptoms. These results suggest that mood disorders may have an important role on subjective perception of gastroenterological symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome.
