Varoluşçu psikolojik yaklaşım anksiyeteyi varlığın muhtemel bir yokluğu fark etmesi olarak tanımlamaktadır. Bu tanıma göre anksiyete mutlaka patolojik olarak etiketlenmez, aksine normal anksiyetenin kişinin kendisini gerçekleştirmesi için gerekli olduğu düşünülür. Öte yanda patolojik anksiyete yokluktan kaçmak için varlığı inkar etmek demektir. Ölüm ve sonluluk düşüncesi de insan için anksiyete kaynağıdır ancak ölümün varoluşsal farkındalığı, hayatı anlamlandırır. Varoluşsal psikoloji anksiyeteyi “özgürlüğünün başdön-mesi” olarak isimlendirmekle onun insan doğası için taşıdığı yapıcı değere işaret etmektedir.

Existential pschology defines anxiety as the awareness of the being of the possible nonbeing. According to this definition anxiety must not always be labelled as pathological, on the contrary, normal anxiety is thought to be necessary for self-affirmation. On the other hand pathological or neurotic anxiety is considered as the denial of being to avoid nonbeing. Death and finitude are sources of anxiety for human beings but it is only the awareness of death, that gives meaning to life. Existential psychology refers to the constructive value of anxiety for human nature by defining it as the “dizziness of freedom”.
