Kendilik kavramına dair baskın görüşe göre bireyin özerkliği vurgulanmaktadır. Klasik Batı felsefe geleneğinde özerk kendilik, bağımsızlık ve ayrımlaşma-bireyleşme ile tanımlanmaktadır. Son yıllarda, psikolojide, insan gelişiminde ve aile terapisinde daha ilişkisel bir kendilik görüşü ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu makalede, klasik gelişim kuramından daha ilişkisel görüşlere doğru olan bu yönelim, aile terapisi bağlamında gözden geçirilmiştir. Kendilik, farklı bakış açılarından incelenmiş ve özerklik, güç ve bağlanma/bağlanmama ile ilgili formulasyonlara değinilmiştir.

According to the dominant view, the self is defined as the autonomous, separate individual. In Western classical view, autonomous self is characterized by independence and separation-individuation. In recent years, a more relational view of the self has emerged in psychology, human development and family therapy. This review article considers shifts from classical developmental theory toward a more relational view in thinking about the self in the context of family therapy. The self concept is explored from different formulations of autonomy, power and connection/ disconnection.
