Genogram, terapistler, danışmanlar ve diğer sağlık çalışanları için önemli bir klinik araçtır. Aile ilişkilerini değerlendirme, bilgi toplama ve terapi uygulamasında temaları ortaya çıkarmada kullanılabilmektedir. Bu makalenin birinci bölümünde; farklı alanlardaki, farklı bakış açılarına göre gerçekleştirilen genogram kullanımına değinilmiştir. İkinci bölümde, terapötik süreç olarak hasta-terapist işbirliğinin genogram oluşturma ile bütünleştirilmesi ele alınmıştır. Son olarak, kişisel genogramın psikoterapi eğitimi almakta olan öğrencilerin eğitiminde kullanılması gözden geçirilmiştir.

Genograms are important clinical tool for therapists, counselors and other health professionals and can be used for assessment, gathering information on family relationships and exploring themes in therapy practice. This article reviews the literature on genograms and examines the use of this tool from a number of perspectives in family therapy in the first section, integration of patient-therapist collaboration into genogram construction as a therapeutic process in the second section, and use of genograms as a training tool in increasing self awareness of students who are undergoing psychotherapy training in the final section.
