Geçmişten günümüze psikiyatrik bakımda büyük bir paradigma değişikliği yaşanmıştır. Başlangıçta tıbbi modelin etkisinde bir bakım anlayışı benimsenmiştir. Bu anlayış psikiyatri hemşiresini bir otorite olarak gördüğünden, bakım ilişkisi içinde hastaya eşit olmayan bir statü vermektedir. Hasta-hemşire ilişkisini sorgulanabilir hale getiren bu durum, psikiyatri hemşireliği teorilerinin etkisinde şekillenen psikiyatrik bakım anlayışı ile yeniden yapılandırılmıştır. Bu bağlamda psikiyatrik bakım; hemşireliği ''terapötik bir kişilerarası süreç'' olarak kabul eden psikiyatri hemşireliği bakım modelleri ile, tıbbi modelin kanıt temelli yaklaşımlarının bir arada olduğu yeni bir paradigmaya doğru evrilmiştir. Günümüzde psikiyatrik bakım, birey merkezli ve iyileşme temelli bir model içinde gelişen, psikiyatrik bozuklukların nörobiyolojisini ve psikotrop tedaviyle ilgili kanıtlarını anlama ve bunları hasta-hemşire ilişkisine entegre etmeyi sağlayan bir yaklaşım haline gelmiştir. Psikiyatrik bakım ilişkisi, farklı kültür, inanç ve değerlere sahip olan hasta ve hemşire arasında gelişen ve sürdürülen profesyonel bir ilişkidir. Bu ilişkinin profesyonelliğinin güvencesi ise değerlere dayalı bakım vermektir. Bu makalede psikiyatrik bakıma temel oluşturan değerler incelenmiştir.

From past to present, there has been a big change of paradigm in the mentality of psychiatric care. At first, it was influenced by the medical model. This mentality sees the nurse as a authority and because of that, it gives the patient a status that is uneven in the care relationship. This situation makes the nurse-patient relationship questionable, thus it was restructured with a different mentality which is shaped around psychiatric nursing theories. Therefore psychiatric care evolved into a new paradigm which has both psychiatric nursing care models that accept nursing as therapeutic personal process and evidence-based approaches of the medical model. Today psychiatric care has become an approach that develops in a person-centered and based on healing model. This approach tries to understand the neurobiology of psychiatric disorders and its evidences about psychotropic treatment. Then it integrates them with nurse-patient relationship. Psychiatric care relationship is a professional relationship that develops and is sustained between patients and nurses who are from different cultures and have different beliefs. The guarantee of this relationship is to give value-based care. In this article, the fundamental values of psychiatric care are examined.
