Farmakoterapinin keşfinden önce ruhsal bozuklukların tedavisinde elektrokonvülzif tedavi (EKT) tek başına yaygın olarak kullanılmıştır. 1950 ve 1960’lı yıllarda farmakoterapinin keşfinden sonra psikotrop ajanlarla beraber uygulanmaya başlanmıştır. Aynı dönemde EKT’ nin anestezi eşliğinde uygulanmaya başlanması ile EKT, anestezik ajanlar ve psikotropik ilaçlar arasında etkileşim önem kazanmıştır. Yazıda bu ajanların birbiriyle etkileşimleri ve EKT’nin terapötik cevabına etkileri literatürdeki son bilgiler ışığında ele alınmıştır.

Before the discovery of pharmacotherapy, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been widely used in the treatment of mental illnesses. After the discovery of pharmacotherapy in 1950 and 1960’s, it has been started to apply in combination with psychotropic agents. With the use of anaesthesia during ECT, interactions between ECT, anaesthetic agents and psychotropic drugs have become great importance. These interactions and the effect of these agents on the therapeutic response of ECT have been considered in the light of recent information in the literature.
