Halkın, ruhsal hastalıklara yönelik tutumları tek tip olmaktan uzaktır. Sosyodemografik değişkenler (yaş, cinsiyet, eğitim gibi), hastalık konusunda bilgi, hasta kişilerle kişisel deneyimin olması, ruhsal hastalık etiketi, hastalığın psikopatoloji tipi, hastanın özellikleri de ruhsal hastalara ve hastalıklara yönelik tutumlar üzerinde etkilidir. Bunlardan başka, ayrıca yasalar, devlet politikaları ve kitle iletişim araçları da önemli etkilerde bulunmaktadır. Bu yazıda sosyodemografik değişkenlerin ruhsal hastalıklara ilişkin tutumlar üzerinde olan etkileri konusunda bilgi veren çalışmalar gözden geçirilecek ve hangi değişkenin etkilerinin ne yönde olduğu tartışılacaktır.

Evidence shows that public attitudes towards mental illness and the mentally ill are far from being uniform. But there is considerable evidence that variables such as age, sex, education, socio-economic level, direct experience with a psychiatric patient, psychopathology type and labelling are likely to have some influence on attitudes towards mental illness. Besides the laws, goverment policy and the mass media have important effects on attitudes too. In this review the studies about the effects of social and demographic features on attitudes towards mental illnesses has examined and these effects was discussed for the each factor.
