Aile terapileri, insan davranışının içinde yaşadığı sistem içinde anlam kazandığı görüşünden hareketle ailenin ruhsal sorunların gelişimindeki rolünü araştıran çalışmalardan köken almıştır. Gelişim sürecinde aile terapileri psikiyatri ve psikolojinin yanı sıra iletişim teorileri, sibernetik, genel sistemler yaklaşımı gibi teorik temellerden beslenmiş, bireye kapalı bir sistem gibi yaklaşan bireysel terapilere alternatif olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. İkinci Dünya Savaşı sonrası gelişen bir yaklaşım biçimi olarak aile terapisinin tarihçesi oldukça kısadır. Buna karşın bağlama duyarlı yaklaşım biçimi aile terapilerinin dönemsel felsefi değişimler doğrultusunda değişim ve gelişimini kolaylaştırmıştır. Başlangıçta aile terapilerinin temelinde yer alan görüşlerin bir bölümü günümüzde kabul görmese de temel çatıyı oluşturan sistemik/sibernetik çerçeve tüm aile terapisi ekollerince halen benimsenmektedir. Bu yazıda aile terapilerinin tarihsel gelişimi teorik çerçevenin gelişimi ve buna paralel olarak uygulamaların gelişimi açısından özetlenmiştir.

Family therapies have mainly originated from the research aiming to understand the role of the family in development of mental health problems, based on the idea that human behavior acquires a meaning only in relation to its context. Theories underlying family therapy techniques have prospered by implementation of ideas from communication theories, cybernetics, general systems theory in addition to theories of psychiatry and psychology. As an approach developed after Second World War, the history of family therapy is quite short., although the context sensitive approach inherent in family therapy theory has enabled family therapy techniques develop and change greatly in terms of changes in main philosophical changes of the era. Though some of the ideas that were at the origins of family therapy are not accepted today, the systemic/cybernetic framework is still widely accepted by all family therapy models. This paper summarizes the developmental history of family therapy in terms of emergence of theoretical framework and family therapy practice that developed paralel to it.
